Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age Related Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is an eye disease that is most common among senior patients. It involves a deterioration of the cells of the macula, the central portion of the retina, where the images we see are recorded and sent via the optic nerve to the brain. In the early stages of macular degeneration, there are no signs until eventually the patient starts to notice that their central vision is blurry or wavy. As the disease progresses, the patient may start to completely lose their central vision. Once central vision is completely lost, the patient would be considered legally blind.

Schedule an Annual Eye Exam for Macular Degeneration Diagnosis, Monitoring & Referrals

Macular degeneration and other types of retinal degeneration can be diagnosed during an annual eye exam. While there is no known cure, the progression of the disease can potentially be slowed through diet and lifestyle changes.

Call and schedule your annual vision exam with an optometrist at Griffin Optometric Group. We have optometry offices in Laguna Niguel, San Clemente, and Talega, and accept a variety of insurance plans. Using the latest optical technology, our doctors are very successful at accurately diagnosing a wide range of eye conditions and providing high-quality eye care. If you are diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration, we will monitor its progress and provide a referral to a local retinal specialist that we know and trust.
